Destructive Divorce

 

The park was intensely green after two days of rain. The sky was clear and a cool breeze stirred the many trees that provided shade for the three of us. I was seated at a picnic table with a fourteen year old and her mother. It had been three years since I had last been with this family. The change in the child was amazing. She was turning into a young woman. I had received a call earlier in the week. “Can you see Missy? She has been in trouble and is asking to talk to you again.” I had no office at the time and said so, but the mother was insistent so we decided on the park. After initial greetings and comments on the weather I ask, “So why are we here?” The child hung her head and then said, “Did you know that Dad moved to Arizona?” The sadness in her eyes told me of the great hole in her heart.

 

“How often do you hear from him?” I asked. “Well he is very busy ya know”, the child said. She looked as though she was going to say more and I knew I had to begin what I had come for today.
